Mental Health First Aid Programs

Adult Mental Health First Aid

  • MHFA teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use conditions among adults. This training gives adults the skills they need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

    • How to interact with a person in crisis

    • How to connect a person with help

    • Expanded content on trauma, substance use and self-care

  • In-Person Course: Participants will participate in a 7.5-8 hour in-person training

    Blended Course: After completing a 2-hour self-paced online course, Participants will participate in a 6.5-hour instructor-led session on zoom or in-person.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

  • Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among children and adolescents ages 12-18

    • Common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges in this age group, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD)

    • Common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges

    • How to interact with a child or adolescent in crisis

    • How to connect the youth with help

    • Expanded content on trauma, substance use, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying

  • In-Person Course: Participants will participate in a 7.5-8 hour in-person training

    Blended Course: After completing a 2-hour self-paced online course, Participants will participate in a 6.5-hour instructor-led session on zoom or in-person.

Community Specific Courses

  • Community-specific courses are Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) courses tailored to meet the needs and considerations of distinct populations.

  • Primeros Auxilios de Salud Mental (MHFA, por sus siglas en inglés) te enseña cómo identificar, entender y responder ante los signos de un problema de salud mental o de uso de sustancias en adultos.

    Tres Modalidades de Aprendizaje

    • Presencial – Los participantes reciben su entrenamiento durante una sesión presencial de 6,5 horas dirigida por un Instructor.

    • Semipresencial – Los participantes primero finalizan un curso autoguiado en línea de 2 horas, y luego asisten a un entrenamiento de 4,5 a 5,5 horas dirigido por un Instructor. El entrenamiento dirigido por el Instructor puede ser:

      • Una clase presencial.

  • Improve quality of life and learn how to assist and support older adults who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge by getting certified in an evidence-based, early intervention training program. Older adults have high rates of late-onset mental health challenges, like anxiety and depression, and low rates of identification and treatment.

  • Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) for Public Safety teaches the skills needed to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.   • Primeros Auxilios de Salud Mental de Jóvenes te enseña cómo identificar, entender y responder ante los signos de un problema de salud mental o de uso de sustancias en niños y adolescentes entre 12 y 18 años.

    Tres Modalidades de Aprendizaje

  • Confidently recognize & respond to an indigenous adolescent ages 12-18 who may be experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge or crisis. Adolescence is a time of critical change and development and a time when mental health challenges often emerge. Provide a strong cultural connection and early intervention with a culturally appropriate course designed to acknowledge and honor Tribal communities and Indigenous Peoples’ practices.

    In-Person Course: Participants will participate in a 7.5-8 hour in-person training

teen Mental Health First Aid

  • teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) teaches teens in grades 9-12, or ages 14-18, how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges in their friends and peers

    • Common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges

    • Common signs and symptoms of a mental health crisis, particularly suicide

    • The impact of school violence and bullying on mental health

    • How to open the conversation about mental illnesses and substance use with friends

    • How to seek the help of a responsible and trusted adult

  • In-person – Lessons are conducted in person in six 45-minute sessions or three 90-minute sessions

    Blended – Teens complete a self-paced online lesson, then participate in six live, Instructor-led sessions. These Instructor-led sessions can be:

    • Video conferences

    • In-person classes
